Don’t you love it when a hot new trend is actually a classic design? This summer that trend is ikat. Pronounced “ee-kaht,” it is a method of weaving that uses a dyeing process similar to tie dyeing on the threads before they are woven. According to Wikipedia, ikat is a near universal weaving style common to many world cultures … and one of the oldest forms of textile decoration. This summer, ikat paterns popping up everywhere, from clothing to jewelry to accessories for your wardrobe and home. Sound interesting? Take a look at some examples of how today’s ikat puts a modern twist on a design classic.

Another similar textile in this family is batik. Batik patterns are created by melting wax over fabric and subsequently dying it. The process is repeated for other colors until all dying is completed and at the end of the dye process, the wax is removed.

Take a look at these lovely batik textiles from Katherine Rally (www.katherinerally.com)

The name Katherine Rally comes from its two designers/creators, Katherine and Rally Dupps. When the economy bit the dust, Kathy, Rally and their two small children relocated to the island paradise of Bali, Indonesia. Surrounded by stunning beauty, they created their own line of batiks inspired by their love of travel, textiles and design.  Click here for where to buy.
