Texture is the hidden hero of interior design. The subtle touches that bring sophistication and finesse to a room are often accomplished by adding texture. Texture can refine similar colors, or make different colors pop. Texture can be added by layering different fabrics, mixing paint finishes, or juxtaposing different wood finishes.
The image below is a wonderful example of how mixing textures can create a whimsical, polished appearance. The roughness of the wood and rope are a perfect contrast to the smooth, glossy finishes on the collection of pottery. By also adding the matte finish on the wall, natural touches like drift wood and a butterfly, and the soft fraying material swatches, you can see how using textures in a room can add a new dimension to your look.
Textural differences can be very opposing, like the silk on the bedding, to the shadows created by the cutout bed frame and ruffled rug.
Sometimes texture is slightly more subtle, like the molding and mixed woods in this living room.
Woven baskets and rugs are an easy solution for adding texture.
Mirrors and reflective surfaces add sparkle next to raw wood planks and a woven bath mat.
Simply mixing different fabrics like linen and silk can be very textural.

Beautiful Rooms!
In love with the little girl/baby room. Love the washed out muted and bold colers mixed. Give a bright yet soft and cozy feel. I want to cuddle up and take a nap!
Nothing like texture in a room. It adds a lot of character.
Baskets are my favorite way to add texture. Both grassy woven baskets, and wire ones too.
Just like music, texture creates a symphony~
I love thinking of design with all the senses alive.

I love the room with the tree bed…would make a great guest room.
what a great decorating lesson! I am definitely taking notes!
I just love the cutout tree bed. Can you please tell us who makes it?
Texture does add so much interest to a run. I love wallpapers with rough finishes and using lots of different textured fabrics to dress up a bed. Thanks for the great article!
The rugs in the pictures are also gorgeous!
