Rambling green pastures, idyllic meandering streams, perfectly manicured green lawns. These are just a sampling of the features my dream country cottage would boast. Maybe someday that dream will come true! But until then, I will have to just bring a little country to my home.

My favorite way to do that is to spend an afternoon just outside the city, hunting down cottage treasures!

Just heading out of town by a half hour or more could save you big bucks! Flea markets, antique sales and barn sales in the country are often filled with treasures us city dwellers see in town, but at a fraction of the price!

These are just a few of the things I regularly spot while treasure hunting in the country:

Vintage marquee letters

Skeleton keys

Galvanized metal buckets and crates

Mismatched antique flatware

Salvaged windows and doors

Old grain and flour sacks

I really love salvage windows and doors, especially as headboards or room dividers. I was totally inspired by the hanging window separators in the film “High Fidelity” (at Lisa Bonet’s apt). Good post!

  5. I almost bought some keys like that from Pottery Barn!! not now!

I really like the creativity here! Simple things used in lovely ways!

  7. Great ideas. I love to repurpose furniture. Is cottage-style the PC term for quirky and homespun? If so, I think this is my general style.

I took an old metal gate and wired some candle holders to it. I spray painted it and hung it on the wall. It made an amazing focal point and the ambience of the burning candles was an extra plus.

I almost want to try my hand at making the cutlery chandeliers- pretty interesting. And I LOVE that old cathedral window…I feel it would have to be a pretty lucky find to see one like that, though.

And thanks for the fun project idea too, Michelle!

  15. I have the same dreams: a house out in the (English) country-side filled with natural materials that I’ve found on adventures.

BTW, I found this website via PVE — she’s extraordinary. I hope she wins the PB gift card!
